Dead in Sin

In Ephesians 2:1-3, Paul gives a sober diagnosis of humanity apart from Christ. We are spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins, walking under the influence of the world, the devil, and our own fallen desires, and standing under the righteous judgment of God. Our problem is therefore deeper than ignorance, weakness, or a need for self-improvement. We need life.

This passage also changes how Christians understand both sin and grace. It leaves no room for spiritual pride, teaches us to pray for God to give life to unbelievers, calls us to place our desires under the authority of Scripture, and reminds us never to treat salvation as ordinary. The more clearly we understand what sin has done, the more clearly we see the wonder of God's grace.
