Ephesians 2 begins with the terrible reality of humanity apart from Christ: dead in trespasses and sins, enslaved to the course of this world, and by nature children of wrath. Then verse 4 changes everything: “But God.” Paul does not describe humanity finally improving itself. He shows us God acting. Because He is rich in mercy and great in love, God makes His people alive together with Christ, raises them with Christ, and seats them with Christ. Salvation is entirely the work of God and is rooted in our union with Jesus.

That truth gives Christians both humility and assurance. We have nothing to boast about because spiritually dead people do not resurrect themselves. At the same time, our hope does not rest on our ability to impress God. It rests in Christ, who died in the place of sinners, rose from the grave, and gives life to everyone who repents and trusts in Him. God’s redeemed people will forever display the immeasurable riches of His grace.
