Saved by Grace, Made for Good Works

Ephesians 2:8-10 brings us to one of Scripture’s clearest statements about salvation. We are saved by grace through faith, and this salvation is not our own doing. Faith does not make Christ sufficient or add something missing to His work. Saving faith rests in the Christ who is already sufficient. We come to Him empty-handed, trusting the crucified and risen Savior as our only hope before a holy God.

Because salvation is God’s gift, there is no room for boasting. Yet Paul immediately turns from saying salvation is “not a result of works” to saying that we have been “created in Christ Jesus for good works.” That order matters. Good works do not cause our salvation. They are the fruit of it. God makes His people alive in Christ and then changes the way they walk. Often that obedience is ordinary: loving our families, forgiving others, confessing sin, serving the church, caring for our neighbors, and speaking about Christ.

The call, then, is to take the next faithful step. If you have never trusted Christ, come to Him empty-handed.
