God Alone: The Only Refuge That Holds | Psalm 62

Psalm 62 speaks to a common human struggle. When life becomes unstable, we instinctively look for something to hold us steady. This psalm exposes how easily we place our trust in things that feel secure until circumstances change.

In this message, we see that Psalm 62 is carefully shaped to teach us how faith functions in real life. It begins with a confession of who God is, moves through pressure and opposition, returns again to that confession, and only then exposes the false refuges we cling to. The psalm ends with theology, not resolution, reminding us that power belongs to God and steadfast love belongs to Him.

The psalm teaches us that silence before God is not weakness or denial. It is faith refusing to panic. To wait in silence is to stop filling the space with our own solutions and allow God’s sufficiency to speak first. Because God alone is our salvation and refuge, we are called to trust Him at all times and to pour out our hearts before Him honestly and without restraint.

Psalm 62 also exposes the weightlessness of created things. People, wealth, success, and security cannot bear the weight of ultimate trust. They are not evil, but they are insufficient. When we ask them to function as refuge, they collapse under the weight and often take us with them.

The psalm ultimately leads us to Jesus Christ. The God who holds all power is also the God of steadfast love, and He has proven that love by sending His Son to bear the judgment our works deserve. Because Christ has carried that weight for us, we are free to lay aside false refuges and rest in God alone as the only refuge that holds.
