God of Faithfulness, God of Judgment (Daniel 5:1-31)

In Daniel 5, we encounter one of the most sobering scenes in all of Scripture.

King Belshazzar throws a feast while an invading army surrounds Babylon. The city feels secure. The walls are strong. The supplies are plentiful. The king drinks from sacred vessels taken from God’s temple and praises false gods.

Then everything changes.

A hand appears and writes on the wall.

Mene. Tekel. Parsin.

God had numbered the kingdom’s days. The king had been weighed and found wanting. The empire would be divided and given over to its enemies.

Daniel 5 confronts us with two unshakable truths.

First, God is sovereign. He raises kingdoms and removes them. He numbers days. He weighs hearts. His judgment is not delayed by human pride or political strength.

Second, judgment is certain. Belshazzar knew the story of Nebuchadnezzar. He knew how God had humbled the proud. Yet he continued in pride. His sin was not ignorance. It was rebellion against known truth.

And if we are honest, that is our story too.

Left to ourselves, we live for our own glory. We seek comfort, pleasure, and recognition. We handle holy things casually. We ignore the light we have been given.

If we are weighed on our own merits, we will be found wanting.

But Daniel 5 does not leave us without hope.

Where Belshazzar stood condemned, Jesus Christ stood faithful. Where we fail to honor God perfectly, Christ obeyed perfectly. On the cross, He bore the verdict that should have been written over our lives.

When we trust in Him, His righteousness stands in our place.

Daniel 5 is a warning. It is also an invitation.

Do not ignore known truth. Do not presume tomorrow. Do not live for passing glory.

Turn to Christ. Trust His finished work. Live for the glory of the One whose kingdom will never fall.
